- Our apprentices are a vital part of our farm community. -

Wintertime on the farm is different. Wild Harmony Farm is a year-round operation. Some of our livestock are raised seasonally and some stay with us through the beauty of New England winter.  We are a diverse, certified organic livestock farm in Exeter, RI focused on environmental stewardship, utilizing regenerative farming practices. Year-round we raise, 100% grass-fed beef cattle, organic pigs, and organic layers. Our organic meat chickens and organic turkeys are warm-season additions. During the dormant season of winter, our cattle are fed hay while outdoors on pasture and our pigs raised in the woods with mobile shelters to keep them warm and dry. When the grass is growing, we graze our animals in an intensive rotational system to maximize benefits to the animals’ health and the land, moving fences every day and grow vegetables on 1/10 of an acre, manage a 2-acre apple orchard and keep honeybees. In early February we tap maple trees and make delicious maple syrup through March.   We sell meat and eggs through a 20-member CSA, our farm store, farmer’s market, wholesale accounts with restaurants and butcher shops, and the retail app WhatsGood Marketplace. Although it's a different season, it's still a vibrant beautiful, busy season here on the farm.

- Job description

Wild Harmony Farm apprentices will be helping with all aspects of farm operations, including animal husbandry, building projects, improvement projects, organizational projects, marketing, retail, and wholesale sales interactions. This will include daily chores, animal management and rotation, breeding, animal health care, slaughter, tractor operation and wholesale deliveries.  As on any farm, significant time will be spent on problem-solving, repairing, constructing, and cleaning, but we also use this darker season to show behind the scenes of this year-round operation.  We spend time in the warm months canning and freezing fruit and vegetables for winter consumption and are happy to share.  The apprentices will also help with CSA share packing and farm store operations, social media account contributions as well as educational tours and programs on the farm.  We will make every effort to educate and include our apprentices in every task and will tailor the educational opportunities to the desires of the apprentices. Some aspects of the work are efficiency and task-oriented. We work hard to make this a good place to live and work.

- What we are looking for

This is a perfect place for someone looking to learn what it entails to include animals in their future farming endeavors. Our ideal candidate will be an avid learner, a considerate and respectful housemate, self-motivated, able to work independently and contribute thoughtfully in a team. The candidate will be able to work long hours with a good attitude, able to lift 50 lbs, competent with manual transmissions, willing to get dirty, passionate about food, and has desires to continue farming in the future. Social media management, marketing, carpentry, construction or mechanical experience are desired, but not necessary. We have a “farm family” meal once a week to break bread together and stay connected as a community. All other meals are cooked separately in the apprentice village. Each season, the apprentices decide how cooking/sharing groceries works best for them.  A personal vehicle is a must, as there is no immediate access to public transportation nor are we on a good cycling road. The farm has a Mon.-Fri. workweek with rotating weekend duty shared amongst farm staff. A site visit prior to acceptance is greatly preferred. Non-tobacco users are greatly preferred but honesty is most important.  We are looking for apprentices to start November 12th and work until mid-April.  Longer-term agreements are possible upon further discussion, as we value keeping folks from season to season.
